Research

  • Organisation

MITs (Most Important Things)

  • Know what the company are looking for.

Competencies

  • Look at what is required on the job spec.
  • Be prepared to answer questions on your experience relevant to the job spec - If you are not asked these questions make sure to talk about relevant experience yourself
  • Be prepared for questions about your technical skills

Preparation
Do this without looking at your CV and write down, in bullet points, the following points then compare with your CV to see if you have left anything out. Read over this a couple of times so you are comfortable talking freely and confidently during the interview.


Past

  •  A typical day in the life of your role in each job you have had.
  •  Any ad-hoc / once off / sick cover duties you have done that were extra to your role.
  • ∙Give organisation overview, where you fit into the structure of the department.
  • Team size.
  •  Who you report to - Basically, explain it so they can actually visualise you in the office at your desk.
  • Education: master’s? Degree? - Go into detail on subjects that are relevant to the requirements of the role.

Present

  • Why did you leave last role? - Make sure you give good reason and are positive. Don’t be negative about your past employers.
  •  Why are you here (Company)?
  • What interests you about working for this company?
  • Why the particular division/department?
  • What interests you about this role?

Future

  • Have some sort of plan worked out.
  • What do you want to focus on in the future.
  • Ensure that all your answers are relevant to the role.

Questions

  • Have 2 or 3 intelligent questions prepared.
  • Don’t relate these to money/social/holidays/personal etc.

End of interview

  • Declare you interest in the role.
  • You would be amazed the amount of times clients have told me that the candidate didn’t seem interested even when they were – nerves can be a factor in this.
  •  Declare how interested you are at the end of the interview
