Brush up on these career boosting skills in 2019

Posted on 03 January 2019

The start of the new year is a time of reinvention and self-improvement for many people. 2019 is your year to upskill and take a step up the career ladder.

Over the last 12 months at Wallace Myers International’s Irish recruitment office, we have seen a spike in opportunities for particular professional areas including HR, accounting and business support. With these and other growing areas in mind, we have put together a list of skill sets that can boost your career prospects.

Accountancy

If you have a head for numbers and good attention to detail, then an accountancy career could be for you. An accountancy qualification can take you many places. It could see you working in a multinational tech company, in-house at a national grocery chain, at a not-for-profit or in an accountancy practice.

In Ireland, the ACCA is the most widely recognised qualification in this area and a can be studied full-time, part-time, online or long distance. The ACCA is largely recognised overseas, giving you the opportunity to travel and work.

Human Resources

Throughout 2018 there was a continued trend in employers seeking HR professionals who had completed or were studying for a CIPD qualification. The CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) is a professional association for human resource management professionals.

Through a range of flexible study options, the CIPD offers training that will help you either begin or enhance your career in HR. Training offered includes HR practice or management, employment law, learning and development qualifications and employee engagement.

GDPR and Data Protection

If 2018 could be summed up in one tiny abbreviation it would be GDPR. Prior to enforcement in May the call from business for GDPR consultants was huge but now that the dust has settled career options are springing from the change in regulation.

Along with an increase in companies hiring Data Protection Officers to work in-house, more and more employers are looking for professionals from a range of fields who have GDPR or data protection training. Our own clients have requested finance administrators, marketing executives, receptionists, IT officers and more with this added area of knowledge.

Data Analytics

One of the most in demand professions across a plethora of business and organisation types is the Data Analyst. At Wallace Myers International, we are constantly placing data analysts regularly with transport, retail, gaming and finance clients.

For people with analytical and creative minds, this is a popular career and one that can be studied as a night course whilst maintaining your current job.

Retail Management

For anyone looking to take their retail career further, a retail management qualification will boost the opportunities available to them. A course of this type usually includes modules on people management, finance, operations and customer relations. Coupled with your hands on experience working as a duty officer or floor manager, for example, this qualification could be a worthwhile investment.

If you are unsure which path to take to improve your career options we recommend taking a look at a cross section of job descriptions in your preferred field. This is a quick and simple way to learn what employers - specifically the type of employers you want to work for - are looking for in their new recruits.
