How To Create And Maintain Your Personal Branding

Posted on 02 June 2016

According to the Marketing Expert, Laura Lake, Personal Brand is “the proactive way of controlling your career development and how you are perceived in the market place.” And that is why it is really important for any professional to build a good brand from which to build your career. Here are some steps to help you create your personal brand.

You are a brand

You might not see yourself as a Coca-Cola, but you probably want to be chosen over your competitors, you want to stand out in an interview, you want to sell yourself as the best person for the role, and this, my friend, involves time.

It’s all about strategy.

Find out what you are good at, what makes you different than others

First thing when starting creating your personal branding is finding out what you are really good at. For that, you can ask your friends and co-workers what they think about you, where they see you as irreplaceable. This will help you to figure out your strengths and get confident and you can also see where you can improve yourself.

Your CV is your advertising tool

After you learn what you are good at it is time to let the others know it as well. Start by updating your CV, not only your objectives but also the design so it reveals who you are and what benefits you can bring to the position. Remember, your CV is still a strong tool to sell your brand. It is probably the first contact that employers will have with you, so make sure your brand message is consistent: include links to your online profiles such as LinkedIn and online portfolio if relevant for your chosen profession.

Online and Offline presence

“Out of sight, out of mind”. If you don’t have an online presence yet, I would strongly recommend you to start ASAP. Companies, employees, influencers and potential new opportunities are all over the internet. The internet platforms LinkedIn and Twitter are great channels to share your knowledge and to get in touch with other professionals; it’s a good way to build your network. However, even though online presence is precious nothing replaces a hand shake. Attend events and conferences where people have the same interests as you. Get to know other “brands” and let them get to know you. It’s the best way to promote and improve yourself.

Keep learning

Personal brand is all about selling yourself and sharing your knowledge, so it is really important to have a strong voice in your industry. People have to look at you as an influencer, as an expert, as someone they can learn from. And for that you will need fresh and new information all the time. No matter how good you are and how well you know your industry, there is always something to learn. Don’t forget that by doing a course you will find people with similar goals, so not only will you learn something new, but also grow your network.

Creating and maintaining a personal brand is not something that you are going to do overnight. It takes a lot of time and hard work, but at the end of the day it will be worth it.
