Director of Research & Development
The Director of Research & Development will provide strategic leadership for global product development and innovation activities across the organisation. This role will oversee and support cross-functional teams while ensuring the successful execution of international development programmes that support long-term business objectives. The successful candidate will possess strong MedTech leadership experience, technical expertise and a proven ability to drive innovation, collaboration and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage international R&D programmes, ensuring alignment with business priorities, timelines and key deliverables.
- Provide strategic direction and operational leadership to the R&D function while supporting the organisation's innovation strategy.
- Develop, structure and scale high-performing R&D teams across multiple geographical locations.
- Promote a culture of innovation, scientific rigour and engineering excellence.
- Work closely with senior leadership, engineering, quality, manufacturing, operations and commercial teams on a global basis.
- Partner with marketing and commercial stakeholders to identify and define customer, clinician and patient needs.
- Drive innovation initiatives that deliver both technical advancement and commercial impact.
- Identify, assess and mitigate technical and programme-related risks within complex development projects.
- Contribute to strategic planning activities, technical investigations, intellectual property submissions, design reviews and structured problem-solving initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with ISO 13485 quality management requirements and support audit readiness activities.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical, Materials Engineering or a related discipline. Advanced qualifications are advantageous.
- Minimum of 10 years' leadership experience within the medical device sector.
- Strong technical expertise within one or more of the following areas: Structural Heart, Electrophysiology, Neurovascular, or Peripheral Vascular Intervention.
- Demonstrated success leading international development programmes and geographically dispersed teams.
- Proven ability to translate strategic objectives into effective R&D execution plans.
- Strong understanding of medical device design, development and manufacturing processes.
- Excellent communication, presentation and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Track record of fostering a collaborative, innovative and scientifically focused culture.
- 10 years of Medical Equipment Manufacturing experience.
