Senior Reinsurance Underwriter

My Client a leading insurer of Ireland's public sector is looking for a Senior Reinsurance Underwriter to support the Head of Reinsurance in developing and executing a reinsurance strategy aligned to the Strategy of the Company. This role will be responsible for supporting the full end to end management of reinsurance arrangements to include building capability around strategic reporting and analysis as well as deepening the organisation's knowledge, insight, and understanding of reinsurance.

This role will require regular travel and entertaining outside of standard business hours. You will be expected to be available to meet with reinsurance partners when required, sometimes at short notice.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the underwriting risks accepted by the company are adequately covered and protected through reinsurance programmes that fall within the company's risk appetite and support the company's overall strategic objectives.
  • Support the HoR in the management of the annual reinsurance negotiations to ensure the delivery of the best available cover and terms in the market.
  • Work in conjunction with the HoR and the Technical Underwriting & Pricing team to build and maintain a best-in-class suite of reinsurance reporting and analysis tools for Board, Risk Committee and Senior Management that drive operational efficiency within the RI department.
  • Develop and manage relationships with reinsurers, reinsurance intermediaries and service providers to ensure agreed service level agreements are achieved and goodwill with all stakeholders is maintained - this includes supporting the management of the Reinsurance Broker tender process on a periodic basis whilst ensuring adherence to internal procurement guidelines.
  • Engage with reinsurance partners, Member & Client Relations, Underwriting and the Claims department to respond to the changing risk profile of our Members.
  • Develop and implement innovative reinsurance arrangements to reflect the changing risk profile as appropriate.
  • Display and/or develop an understanding of the technical handling of reinsurance proportional / non-proportional treaty claims.
  • Display and/or develop a broad understanding of all reinsurance requirements under the Solvency II regime including the annual completion of the Quantitative Reporting Templates (QRT's).
  • In conjunction with the Risk department keep abreast of all regulatory changes which may impact the reinsurance function.
  • Develop, and assist in the management, of reinsurance IT projects with a sound understanding of IT infrastructure and its interconnectivity with other functions.
  • Participate in the audit and review processes including both internal / external and reinsurer audits.
  • Develop and build strong relationships with a panel of reinsurance brokers, supporting reinsurance carriers and the wider reinsurance market.
  • Represent and promote the company to attract the best quality capacity and coverage available.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the reinsurance practice and become the point of referral and centre of knowledge for all stakeholders around reinsurance.

Requirements:

  • Broad and relevant experience as a Senior Reinsurance Technician and/or Senior Reinsurance Purchaser within the Insurance industry is preferable however a proven track record as a reinsurance underwriter, reinsurance broker or general commercial underwriter with a general understanding of the reinsurance market would be considered.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the reinsurance market and the operations of a reinsurance function are a minimum requirement.
  • Deep knowledge of and expertise in the global reinsurance markets and the workings of reinsurance treaty arrangements is preferable.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and operational requirements related to insurance companies.
  • Strong ability to develop and maintain strong relationships within the reinsurance market and the ability to negotiate, influence and achieve the best outcomes in challenging situations.
  • Ability to develop strong internal relationships across the entire organisation.
  • The ability to maintain a positive attitude when faced with challenging circumstances including changing business and market needs.
  • A problem solver with the ability to think outside the box, look for alternative solutions to complex problems and deliver solutions.
  • Clear and articulate communication skills, the ability to distil often complex issues into salient points for leadership and non-technical audiences.
  • Possess a high level of organisational skills and attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to project manage and to meet short deadlines under pressure.
  • Excellent numeracy and analytical skills, ability to understand large volumes of data and compile reports.
